”Cutting” paint is the act of taking material away from the surface, whether it’s done with sandpaper or with compound -material is being removed and the paint is getting thinner. It is part of the second step in a proper 3-step detail: “Clean, Correct, Protect”.While it’s not something you want to make a regular hobby of; it is sometimes necessary to get the results you’re after. Sometimes a scratch is too deep, or you're a perfectionist and want to get rid of the “orange peel” texture in the paint to leave a glass smooth finish. Cutting is hard work, and shouldn’t be attempted unless you’ve a clear understanding of what the implications are (burning through the paint or putting too much heat into the paint). It’s also very dirty work, expect a full cut/polish job to take upwards of 6 hours and up to 20 hours depending on how detailed you want to go…. Because there is ALWAYS another level up when it comes to the final finish. If you think your car needs paint correction, reach out and let me come take a look at it in person to make a plan on the best solution.
“Polishing” is the final part of the ”correction” process. Sometimes known as “buffing”, this process is similar to cutting but is much less aggressive. After cutting, the paint is left slightly marred from all of the micro scratches created in the process of removing material. Polishing refines those small imperfections and leaves a smooth surface that allows light to reflect back to you -shiny. Not all vehicles that require polishing need to be cut, but any vehicle that was cut -needs polishing afterwards
